well, since you all know how much i love to post my school projects here..

Well, I am Inge and I’m studying in an English-speaking country. I work at a café part-time to support myself, and that is exactly where the problem starts. The City Council has decided that people are not allowed to smoke in public anymore. Which means that they are also not allowed to smoke in the café anymore, which means less income and that is just short for losing my job.

Of course, I would not just let that happen without fighting back. So therefore I’ve decided to write a letter to the City Council, to complain about the whole non-smoking-thing. Next to that, I’m writing an email to a friend of mine who is journalist. He asked me to write something about the whole situation for a series of articles that he’s starting. I’ve decided to give it a go, I mean, I could at least just try?

I don’t expect that much will happen though. I mean, the whole community hates this new law and I bet that they’re all writing letters of complaint to City Council. They’ll just have some guy at the office who will be reading and then burning those letters the entire day, no chance that the real Council will ever read mine.

I still want to write it though, I mean, the thought of giving up without even trying to fight is just so not me!

The letter
Dear City Council,

I am writing you this letter because I am very unhappy with your latest invention: the ban on smoking. Honestly, did you have to do that? I will, of course, tell you why this is a very foolish decision.

First of all, business will suffer from this. I work at a café and I know that the income will be so much lower when this prohibition will be introduced. A ban could seriously damage business in this small town! And for that reason, I am sure that you will receive a lot more letters of complaint since many people will object the ban!

Of course I wouldn’t write you this if I wasn’t sure that I was right. But I am. I used to live in Holland and they did the same thing there. What happened? Well actually, not much. A lot of people didn’t even bother to follow the new rules, they just took no notice of the law. So what are you planning to do – just go round checking if everybody is keeping the law?

So basically, in Holland the majority of people didn’t keep the law. There were restaurants though, that tried to ban smoking people. Sadly, they lost half of their customers overnight.

I’m hoping that you’re beginning to see my point here. This whole new law, it’s nonsense! And if you still don’t feel like you have a clear view on my opinion, please keep an eye on me – I am planning to write an article about this disastrous measure.

Thank you for your time,

Inge den Oudsten
